Andrew's journey towards creating his wellness retreat began with a holiday to Iceland and Scandinavia, where he immersed himself in the local culture of saunas, steam rooms, and hot baths.

The experience left a lasting impression on him, sparking the desire to bring a piece of that culture back home to Melbourne.

'After sampling that culture, I really liked it, so when I got back, I went to the home show, did a bit of investigating, and decided this was what I wanted,' Andrew shared.

The Inspiration Behind the Purchase

The Research and Decision-Making Process

Andrew didn't jump into his purchase without some careful consideration. While attending the home show sparked his interest, he also took the time to research online and consult with friends, particularly about the practicalities of installation.

Ultimately, he opted for a wood-fired sauna as this suited his set up with not having to extend electrical power to the pool area. Despite some initial hesitations, Andrew has found the wood-fired sauna to be a fantastic choice.

'It heats up in 40 minutes, and it's hot. I've had this up to 110°C,' he said, with a very satisfied smile.

A Family Affair: Using the Sauna and Hot Tub

Andrew's sauna has quickly become a staple in his family's routine, with the sauna being used at least five times a week, often in the evenings.

The experience has been overwhelmingly positive, not just for Andrew but for his friends as well.

'I have friends over—the guys after tennis. I originally got the hot tub and the sauna, and in summer, I found it difficult to cool off, so I decided to get an ice bath,' Andrew explained.

When it comes to the hot tub, Andrew describes it as a 'liquid sauna' and praises the quick heating and relaxing experience it provides.

'It feels very decadent sitting out with the steam coming off and the stars in the evening—it's fantastic, very relaxing.'

The Ice Bath: A Love-Hate Relationship

While the sauna and hot tub have been immediate hits, the ice bath presents a bit more of a challenge. Set to 8°C, Andrew admits it's harder to get into straight from room temperature, but coming from the sauna makes it more bearable.

'It's really good getting back in the sauna from the ice bath—it doesn't feel hot at all,' he noted.

Andrew's decision to add an ice bath was motivated by both the desire for contrast therapy and the need to cool off during Melbourne's hot summers.

He has done some research on the health benefits of ice baths and is slowly working his way towards lowering the temperature even further.

Choosing Heavenly Saunas

'I liked the quality of the saunas. I was looking at the other saunas at the home show, and I liked the fact that this is from the US—they’ve been doing it for over 40 years. The woodfire heater is from Finland, and they’ve also been doing it for a long, long time—it's quality stuff, and I plan on using it for years. I wanted to get something that would last.'
