How do Sauna Heaters Work?

How do sauna heaters work? How do they achieve that perfect warmth? What's the secret behind their relaxing heat?

In this article, I’ll help you understand the mechanics of sauna heaters, exploring how they work to create that ideal sauna environment.

Let's turn up the heat and get started!

What is a Sauna Heater?

Simply put, it’s the engine of your sauna. It’s what transforms an ordinary room into a heated oasis of relaxation.

As the engine, these heaters generate the heat and, in many cases, the steam that creates the quintessential sauna experience we all love.

The following are the two types of heating methods we at Heavenly Saunas recommend:

    • Electric Heaters

    • Wood-Burning Heaters

The Mechanics of Sauna Heaters

So let's dig into how these heaters work their magic. When you know the mechanics, it can help you choose the right one for your needs and get the most out of your sauna experience.

Electric Sauna Heaters

Electric heaters are a popular choice for saunas.

Why? They're incredibly easy to use. With just a flick of a switch, you can start heating your sauna.

Most electric models come with an internal thermostat control.

It’s the thermostat that allows you to set and maintain your desired temperature. They heat up quickly and evenly, making them perfect for those who want convenience and reliability without any fuss.

Electrical heaters can also come with remote control - so in our busy modern age this can be very handy.

Types of Electric Heaters

There are many types of electric heaters and the one you select will be which fits your sauna design and model best to elevate your sauna experience:

Two types of popular heaters that we carry are the mounted Wall Heater and the floor Pillar Heater.

    Sauna Heaters

Wall Heaters, like our popular wall-mounted Vega heater, combine sleek, modern design with user-friendly functionality. With straightforward installation using a rack and screw system, the Vega heater is as easy to set up as it is to use, adding a refined touch to your sauna space.

On the other hand, Pillar Heaters bring a unique aesthetic and versatility to your sauna. With a larger stone surface, they allow for more flexible water application, letting you control the steam intensity for a truly personalised sauna session.

Whether you prefer the streamlined elegance of a wall heater or the bold statement of a pillar heater, each option promises a distinctive sauna experience.

Pillar heaters are renowned for a very steamy experience - so if you love a steamy sauna experience - this may suit you.

    Wood-Burning Sauna Heaters

If you’re after a more rustic and authentic feel, wood-burning heaters are the way to go. These heaters use good old-fashioned firewood to generate heat.

The process involves lighting a fire inside the heater's combustion chamber, which then heats the surrounding rocks. As water is poured over these hot rocks, steam is produced, creating that classic sauna atmosphere.

While they are a bit more work - sourcing the wood and cleaning out ash - the experience is truly unmatched for those who love tradition.

Wood-fired heaters can also get very hot - even more so than an electric heater. So if you think you can manage it and you love that traditional heat experience - it may be an option for you.

    Installation Tips

Installing your sauna heater can be straightforward if you follow a few basic steps:

    • Electric Heaters: These are typically the easiest to operate. You must ensure you use a qualified electrician and follow the electrical standards as set out by your state or territory. Heaters can run on either single or 3 phase power. Note: if installing a high KW unit - over 11KW - you will need 3 phase power.
    • Wood-Burning Heaters: These can be a little harder to install but the good news is you need no power and you can do this yourself. Depending on the sauna, you’ll need to have a flat floor mat for the wood heater to sit on. Also a protecting bedding floor and protective sheath-full around the sauna heater. A chimney and chimney extender is also required.

What the Heavenly Team thinks about Sauna Heaters…

We do love the ease of turning your sauna heater on - either manually or remotely with an electric heater - and the heat from our electrical heaters is amazing.

Having said that when we do our country shows and get the woodfire heater cranking up - well that’s just next level!!

Add some rain and a storm and its sauna bliss!! But either way, you’ll love our saunas and sauna heaters - whichever way you decide to go.
